Bruce Ewert and his Nova Scotian-born wife Pauline Scott moved their young family to Nova Scotia in 2004 and founded L’Acadie Vineyards in the Gaspereau Valley. Bruce identified that the region had great potential for crafting sparkling wine and in 2008, released the first traditional method sparkling wine in Nova Scotia. Since then, national and international accolades for his sparklings have proven his passion.

Bruce has over 25 years of experience in winemaking; managerial and hands-on roles at a variety of small and large wineries in British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Ontario, California and Australia. This makes Bruce the most experienced winemaker in Nova Scotia and is among a handful of specialized sparkling winemakers in Canada. A previously awarded winemaker at some of BC’s leading sparkling wine wineries, he was born in BC and has a degree in Bio-Resource (Agriculture) Engineering from University of British Columbia and has studied winemaking at University of California.

Recognized as both a “SuperLawyer” and “Lawyer of the Year” for his work as an environmental lawyer, Martin E. Levin has more than thirty years of government and private practice experience handling environmental and other complex legal matters. His work has included trial, appellate, and administrative proceedings at the local, state and federal levels, including argument before the United States Supreme Court.

While serving as Massachusetts’ chief environmental prosecutor for the decade of the 1990s, he led the investigation and prosecution of companies for environmental practices that put health and safety at risk. He developed and implemented the state attorney general’s work environment safety initiative, with successful outcomes that included

Creation of the Work Environment Justice Fund, funded through a settlement negotiated by Mr. Levin and administered by the University of Massachusetts to support projects that prevent occupational disease and injury and provide advocacy services for workers with health and safety problems.
Landmark assault and battery convictions for companies’ exposure of their employees to hazardous materials.
A record criminal disposition that included over $1M paid to a state fund dedicated to controlling hazardous material releases, and the state’s first order mandating publicly reviewed audits of the corporate defendant’s occupational safety and environmental compliance practices. Following the investigation led by Mr. Levin, the company admitted to hazardous waste treatment practices that caused an explosion, injuring both employees and firefighters who responded to the scene.

Mr. Levin also prosecuted the precedent-setting civil action against General Electric for failure to notify environmental authorities of PCB contamination caused by company wastes used as residential fill.

In addition, Mr. Levin drafted the Massachusetts public employee whistleblower protection law, and environmental endangerment law.

In private practice, Mr. Levin has continued to provide creative advocacy and thoughtful counsel to businesses, individuals, and public interest advocacy groups. Mr. Levin brought the first successful environmental class action in Massachusetts, winning class certification for a thousand homeowners whose properties were contaminated by an oil spill off the Massachusetts coast. He shepherded the case through extensive discovery and motions practice over a period of five years. After Mr. Levin won jury verdicts for his clients at trial, the defendants agreed to a $12.4 million settlement to compensate the homeowners.

My personal beauty and wellness journey began ten years ago, when the combination of stress and jet-lag were wreaking havoc on my psyche. That stress, along with years of slathering chemical-laden lab samples all over my body while testing new beauty products, had also wreaked havoc on my skin, hair and nails.

As I dove into beauty and wellness research, I found a lot of useful information, products and guidance—from Reiki, meditation, aura cleansing and color therapy to aromatherapy, herbology, Ayurveda and Chinese medicine. Add in more than a few mantras, angel readings, acupuncture needles, Korean scrubs and distasteful teas & tinctures, and I now was officially on an alternative, global, holistic ritual-driven beauty track.

My desire to look polished and youthful topped my list of wants. What didn’t I want in my beauty and wellness solutions? Long lists of unrecognizable ingredients. But nowhere could I see trustworthy and soul-calming advice to help me reach my goal of Beauty Happiness—the ultimate balance of mind + body + heart + soul = beauty—so I resorted to cobbling together my own personal recipes from oils, soaks, tinctures, salves, teas, teachers and experts in global integrative solutions, gathered from forays to Mott Street and Saint Marks Place in New York City, all the way to India.

I still find myself spending my weekends tossing marquée-name miracle crèmes from my medicine cabinet that I myself helped develop, motivated by an urge to personalize my own beauty rituals and go back to my Cuban great-grandmother’s beauty recipes—using effective, pure and potent food grade beauty ingredients. So where do I go to buy the ingredients? The food shelves of natural food stores.

All of this questing, searching and slathering—and one major “light bulb” moment—has led me to create LOLI™. I was advising a start-up brand in the face oil category, and sipping on a $12 juice smoothie while staring at the olive oil casks at a retail outpost in Chelsea Markets. All of a sudden, it hit me: I knew right then and there that my mission was to launch a kitchen for beauty-crafting, one where it would be easy for you to discover, enjoy and share beauty ingredients, recipes and rituals at home and online with a community of fellow beauty-blenders.
